Pacers send 78 ‘incorrect calls’ to NBA after Game 2 loss to Knicks

The Indiana Pacers reportedly have submitted 78 plays to the NBA that they believed were called wrong against them during Games 1 and 2 against the New York Knicks in the second round of the playoffs, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said after the 130-121 loss in Game 2 against the Knicks that the team identified 29 questionable calls from Game 1. The Pacers identified 49 more in Game 2. Carlisle said that the Pacers did not decide to send the calls from Game 1 to the league office for review, but after Game 2, they decided to send all of the plays they objected to from the first two games of the series.

As per NBA protocol, the clips that the Pacers have submitted will also be shared with the Knicks. Carlisle did not hold back when speaking about the referees after the Game 2 loss.

“I can promise you that we’re going to submit these tonight,” Rick Carlisle said, via Windhorst. “New York can get ready. They’ll see ’em too. I’m always talking to our guys about not making it about the officials, but we deserve a fair shot.”

Carlisle was ejected in the final two minutes of the game after being given two technical fouls, and indicated after the game that he believes the Pacers were being slighted because they were going up against a large market team in the Knicks.

“Small-market teams deserve an equal shot,” Carlisle said, via Windhorst. “They deserve a fair shot no matter where they’re playing.”

In Game 1, there were multiple calls that the Pacers and their fans felt were wrong, and would have resulted in a different outcome if they were called correctly. The main one was a kicked ball violation that is not reviewable, and was not reversed. That resulted in a Donte DiVincenzo three-point shot to give the Knicks the lead.

Pacers players not blaming the referees

Despite Carlisle displaying his anger at the refereeing in Games 1 and 2 in the series, Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton refused to place the blame solely on that.

“Let’s not pretend like [officiating] is the only reason we lost. We just didn’t play good enough,” Tyrese Haliburton said, via Windhorst.

Haliburton put up a much better effort in Game 2 than he did in Game 1. In the first game of the series, he scored just six points on six shot attempts. He was much more aggressive in Game 2, scoring 34 on 11-19 shooting from the field and 7-11 from three.

Ultimately, it was not enough for the Pacers, as Brunson’s heroics in the second half sparked a Knicks run that gave them control, despite OG Anunoby’s hamstring injury that took him out of the game.

While the Pacers are down 2-0 and upset at the refereeing so far in this series, it is far from over. The Knicks are using a short rotation, and with OG Anunoby’s status in question for Game 3 and possibly the rest of the series, Indiana can almost fully focus on defending Brunson.

Game 3 will be crucial for the Pacers to get back into the series.
